HBR Spark for Learners

Branding and product design for a new leadership learning platform aimed at modern leadership teams.

HBR Spark for Learners

The Challenge

Organizations struggle to deliver scalable, personalized leadership development that fits into the busy schedules of emerging and established leaders. Traditional learning approaches often fail to engage learners because they lack relevance to individual development goals and don't integrate seamlessly into daily workflows. Harvard Business Publishing needed to create a learning platform that provides the personalization that modern learners demand. The core design challenge centered on creating an experience that balanced three critical needs: delivering world-class HBR content across 25,000+ resources, providing intelligent personalization that guides learners toward meaningful skill development, and enabling learning in the flow of work without overwhelming busy professionals.

Our Approach

We anchored the entire experience around learner autonomy and motivation, recognizing that when learners control their own development, their engagement increases dramatically. The design strategy centered on three key pillars: short-burst learning, personalized guidance, and immediate access to leadership insights. We developed the information architecture around HBR's proprietary Leadership Framework, which serves as both a navigation structure and a skills taxonomy. This framework provides learners with clear visibility into their progress against critical capabilities while enabling AI-powered content recommendations tailored to their specific goals. The design emphasized responsive, mobile-friendly patterns that support seamless learning across devices and contexts.

The Solution

HBR Spark delivers a highly personalized online learning experience that puts learners in control of their development journey. The platform features an intuitive content discovery system spanning articles, videos, podcasts, and curated learning pathways, all surfaced through skill-based and AI-driven personalization. The interface includes a "Personalized Learning GPS" that tracks progress over time, recommends content based on development goals and consumption history, and provides dynamic visualizations of skill growth. Premium practice-centric lessons and labs offer safe spaces for application, self-evaluation, and iterative growth, closing the learning-to-action gap.
